If you dont do this for a living and only do it when you have to as a DIY to keep from bleeding cash, then I can totally see how newbies would want to be SURE they get a seal rather than skimp and find a puddle of whatever on the garage floor upon first running the motor. I wouldn't be surprised if to see similar on half the DIY work done by members here. I am sure I overdid it on a coolant pipe here or there, or maybe all of them, but what can I say?
